Office Extracurricular Activity
I hear it all the time at my work, and you probably do too. We should be more creative. This statement gets uttered about every hour on the hour at creative shops. It’s in the name for godsake. So, to spice the punch a bit, I decided to introduce a tried and true school exercise within the walls of 76design.
We all pick a song, the all get thrown in a hat, one is selected and then we create our own interpretation of that song. For round 1, we decided that the format would be a poster. The selected track was Brain of J by Pearl Jam. Personally, I have never heard of the song. So I took an infographic approach, after some investigation. Here’s my rationale.
It appeared on the group’s 5th album. It contained 113 words in total. Finally, I listened to track a grand total of 7 minutes and 77 seconds. I realized that is in fact, 8 minutes and 17 seconds, but 7:77 was a nicer number. The song was about the JFK assassination, so I wanted to depict wounds from the typography, each were “shot” and had hair and ligament fragments with blood spewing out of it. I wanted to use a lot of bright vibrant colours to ff-set the gruesome nature of the theme.
In all, this was a great activity for the office, designer, developers and project mangers all took part. Some of the results were really surprising. It was a great way to bond collectively and it was great to see people dive into a task that had superficial returns. Check out the other creatives.
